What could I learn through Agri-Power FFA?

Eddyville-Blakesburg High School offers a variety of classes to take in order to meet FFA membership requirements. There's an immense amount of knowledge on these topics shared by FFA Advisor, Patrick Powers.

Here are the options for EBHS students taken directly from the course description guide:

Animal Science (1 year)

Elective:  9th - 10th (11th and 12th graders need permission to enroll)

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  None (Member in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     This course is set up for first year agriculture students.  Supervised Agricultural Experience, Parliamentary Procedure, as well as all phases of the animal industry will be discussed.  Adequate time will be spent in the shop facility on carpentry.  Enrollment in F.F.A. is very strongly recommended.

 

 

Advanced Animal Science (1 year)

Elective:  10th - 12th

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  Animal Science (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     Advanced body systems and functions with dissections of animals will make up part of this new course. In depth look at genetics through phenotype as well as cloning will be discussed. The practice of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer is discussed as well.  Judging of livestock will occur along with oral reasons.  Enrollment in F.F.A. is very strongly recommended

 

 

Soils and Crops (1 year)

Elective:  9th - 12th

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  None (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     This course is designed for second year agriculture students to cover all phases of soil testing and judging as well as working with crops that are common to our area.  Adequate time will be spent in the shop facility on constructing products made of wood.  Enrollment in F.F.A. is strongly recommended.

 

 

Ag Management (1 year)

Elective: 10th - 12th

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  None (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     This course is designed for third year agriculture students and covers farm business transactions and record keeping.  Time is shop will be spent working with concrete.  Enrollment in F.F.A. is strongly recommended.

 

 

Ag Sales and Service (1 year)

Elective: 11th - 12th                                                                                                                                                       

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  None (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     This course for fourth year agriculture students is designed to prepare the students for occupations after high school.  Activities include; actual selling of agriculture items, preparing advertisements, radio ads, inventory, record keeping, and other business related items.  Enrollment in F.F.A. is strongly recommended.

 

 

Horticulture (1 year)

Elective:  10th - 12th

Credit:   2

Prerequisite:  None (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     An exciting field has been opened as we will use our green house for this course.  The class will consist of greenhouse design and maintenance as well as indoor plant care and flower arrangement, Landscape design, indoor plant identification and plant sales are also part of the curriculum.  This class is an articulated college credit course.   Enrollment in F.F.A. is strongly recommended.

 

Ag Power Lab (semester)

Elective:  10th - 12th

Credit:  1

Prerequisite:  None (Membership in F.F.A. is highly recommended.)

Description:     Availability to take this class for both semesters will be based on the number of students.  10th-12th grade Ag students who primarily have a conflict with scheduling another Ag class.  The purposes of this class is to provide an opportunity for students to create something in the laboratory area and then proceed to enter it in the county or state fair as a FFA project.  Entering this at a fair is a very high priority for the class.  Working on cars and trucks is prohibited.

 

Students will be able to do projects upon approval by the instructor that are in the areas of wood, concrete, metal, tractor restoration, and electrical.  Documentation of the project by the student will be required to receive an "A" for the course.

 

Students are encouraged to try one of the options,

                -3 small projects

                -2 medium projects

                -1 large project

                or a combination thereof.

Large project - one that is driven or wheeled in.

Medium project - one that two or more people carries in.

Small project - one person can handle carrying it in or out.
